Perspective: Muslim women have duty to seek knowledge | Bareah Alam

Unfortunately, the meshing of cultural norms and religious ideals has created a misconception regarding the role of women in Islam. The media often portray Muslim women as uneducated and oppressed women, who are subservient to men.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Women's History Month. Women in this country did not even have the right to vote 100 years ago, and yet, we are quick to judge that Muslim women are oppressed in this modern age.

In fact, the religion of Islam granted women unprecedented rights at a time when female infanticide was practiced in Arabia.

Unfortunately, the meshing of cultural norms and religious ideals has created a misconception regarding the role of women in Islam. The media often portray Muslim women as uneducated and oppressed women, who are subservient to men.

As a young Muslim woman educated in an all-girls private school, I know that the abilities of women know no bounds, so it upsets me that there are women who fall prey to the cultural norms of their Muslim countries. They fail to realize the rights that their faith grants them in every sphere of life.

In fact, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is the duty of every Muslim man and every Muslim woman to acquire knowledge." Any individual who denies a woman the right to an education is wrongfully misled about the true teachings of Islam.

I encourage all women to honor the struggles of our predecessors who fought for our equal rights before the law, to educate themselves and make valuable contributions to our society.
