The recent unrest in Baltimore again has raised the issue of police brutality, accountability and racial tension in the U.S. The behavior of some of the protesters has been violent and needs to be condemned in strong terms. Likewise, the police brutality and lack of accountability cannot escape condemnation.
The protesters need to obey those in authority and not be violently defiant. Protest against police brutality and the justice system's decision should remain peaceful, cooperative and devoid of all violence and looting, as commanded in the Holy Quran: "O ye who believe! Obey Allah, His Messenger and those in authority among you …" (4:60)
As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, I condemn both the police and the rioters. It is important to address the root cause of the incitement: racial tension and socioeconomic disparity. The Prophet Muhammad stated, "A white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white, except by piety and good action."
Such pious and good people are humble and don't look down on people of other races. Hence, as a society, abiding by this principle and working to bridge the socioeconomic gap can help resolve some of these issues.
