At a time when building peace is much required, it has done nothing but further divide our society and possibly incited a few attacks against innocent Muslim women.

As an imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at of Canada serving the community in Quebec, I find it quite disturbing how the niqab issue is being used for political gain.
At a time when building peace is much required, it has done nothing but further divide our society and possibly incited a few attacks against innocent Muslim women.
If it’s found that any woman is being forced to wear the niqab, I would readily support government intervention. However, as a country that prides itself on tolerance and freedom, it would be a travesty to ban the niqab for all Muslim women. The overwhelming majority of them observe it of free will. I hope to see such issues being put to rest for good, and political discussions focussing on much more relevant issues.
