Perspective: Fighting back with peace | Zohaib Zafar

It is no coincidence that Japanese-Americans who were in internment such as Congressman Mike Honda have become our community's biggest allies.

In response to the terrorists who are attacking innocent people in the name of Islam, many Muslims are fighting back by the way of peace.

Asad Shah was a shopkeeper in Scotland who posted on Facebook, this past Sunday, "Good Friday and very Happy Easter, especially to my beloved Christian nation." Not so long after, he was martyred by Islamic extremists. Shah belonged to the same community that I do, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a community that advocates for tolerance and peace, which is probably what inspired Shah's post. Right here in Hudson, we will help decide who we elect as the President of the United States this upcoming November. We will have a lot of power as voters in this swing state of Ohio. I advocate that we elect someone regardless of their partisanship who is not intolerant of all Muslims. I hope we elect someone who can distinguish between true and peaceful Muslims like members of my community from the violent ones.

During World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the internment of thousands of Japanese-Americans. Yet they were among the most patriotic Americans. The 442nd Infantry Regiment which composed of almost entirely Japanese-Americans fought and died for their country while their families were forcibly incarcerated by our country, one that prides itself on how it values freedom. Many years later, President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act into law, which apologized for the internment on behalf of the American government. Let us not make the same mistake again! It is no coincidence that Japanese-Americans who were in internment such as Congressman Mike Honda have become our community's biggest allies. I hope Hudsonites that I befriended for the 10 years that I lived in Hudson will join me in the fight against terrorism and the fight for tolerance of all those who cherish America.
