Perspective: Faith restored | Alamzeb Khan

This year, as we were distributing water bottles and candies to the parade attendees, I overheard part of a comment by a lady that ended with "... but they are Muslims..."

We were the contingent of Ahmadiyya Muslims at the Independence Day Parade in Bellaire, Houston on July 4. Considering that a Muslim had been attacked on the south side of Bellaire the day before made it a little bit of an unnerving event for us. And of course there is always the one odd heckler, who considers it their duty to yell something disrespectful to us when we are carrying banners of "Muslims for Loyalty to the U.S." and "Love for All Hatred for None."

In fact, last year, one of our 8-year-olds handing out water bottles at the parade was told to go back to where he came from. His answer was beautiful, though. He had said "I am already home."

But we had expected something like this, and that is fine since such people have a ready excuse of hiding behind the First Amendment. So our feelings at the parade are always cautious, and we aim to avoid any confrontations.

This year, as we were distributing water bottles and candies to the parade attendees, I overheard part of a comment by a lady that ended with "... but they are Muslims..." The girl standing next to her, who was probably a relative, went ballistic on her saying quite loudly "so what if they are Muslims, they are just as American and anyone else at the parade today." And just like that my faith in Houstonians, and in all the non-Muslim Americans, was restored.
