UK: Community comes together to celebrate end of Ramadan in Welsh

It's become a tradition to invite residents of Cardiff that are outside the Muslim community to enjoy food as part of the Eid celebration.

Welsh Muslims invited members of the community to join them at their annual Eid dinner in Cardiff today. The interfaith event is to mark the end of Ramadan, which is a month of strict fasting from dawn to sunset.

Organisers of the dinner say they're keen to share their culture with others.

The President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Cardiff, Dr Ata Maaz said Muslims at the event wanted to introduce themselves as peace loving people. He added that it's become a tradition to invite residents of Cardiff that are outside the Muslim community to enjoy food as part of the Eid celebration.


What is Ramadan?

• Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
• It's seen as a time to cleanse the soul, focus attention on God, and put into practice selflessness.
• Fasting during Ramadan is one of the so-called five pillars, or obligations described in Islamic texts, which many Muslims follow.
• Certain people such as children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, the elderly, anyone who is sick and anyone travelling on a journey is exempt.
• The fasting finishes upon the sighting of the next new moon, which take place after 29 or 30 days.
