A close-knit group of Muslims from across the state celebrated the end of Ramadan Wednesday with prayer and traditional Pakistani food.

The families belong to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a sect of Islam, and came from Greater Lafayette, Kokomo and Indianapolis suburbs to be together for the holy Islam holiday called Eid al-Fitr.

"We are gathered over here today to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. And this Eid we celebrate, Muslims celebrate all over the world, after the finishing of 30 days of Ramadan, or fasting," said Saeed Ahmad, community leader of the Indiana chapter of Ahmadiyya.

The celebration, held at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in West Lafayette, began with traditional, congregational prayer and a sermon.

The group prayed for people who have been affected by those who have done heinous acts in the name of Islam, referring to the mass shooting in Orlando last month by Omar Mateen, who pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State during his attack.

After prayers, members of the organization concluded their month of fasting with a spread of homemade cuisine and desserts.
