Canada: Travelling group hopes to combat Islamophobia

“We want to clarify that is not Islam. Islam is being hijacked, Islam is being misused and the word Islam itself means peace.”

A group of volunteers travelling the country to promote the Islamic faith made a stop in Regina Tuesday morning.

The group’s trailer spent the morning in Victoria Park, before moving to the Cornwall Centre around noon.

“One of the major factors of why we are out here is the issue with the extremism we see in the world today,” said Zeeshan Ahmed, Imam of the Regina chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at.

“We want to clarify that is not Islam. Islam is being hijacked, Islam is being misused and the word Islam itself means peace.”

The coast-to-coast exhibition began on July 10 in Toronto. The group travelled to Newfoundland to begin their across the country journey, which will wrap up in Victoria on August 22.

People are encouraged to ask the group questions about Islam.

“People have accepted us with open arms and open hearts and have shown us great support and love,” Ahmed said. “There (are) no words that can explain how thankful we are to the public and how thankful we are to our fellow Canadians.”

While the group is hoping to combat Islamophobia, Ahmed said they have one main message for Canadians.

“Love for all, hatred for none.”
