Amritsar, India: A mentally disabled Christian woman has been hacked to death outside her home in India for allegedly desecrating a Sikh holy book.
Balwinder Kaur, 55, was accused of desecrating the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, a holy book which serves as the foundation of the Sikh scripture. Police had booked and bailed the woman, who was from the Dalit case, after she entered a Sikh temple in Veroke village, Times of India details.
Kaur, who had mental disabilities after an electrical shock 20 years ago, reportedly died from loss of blood after she was attacked using sharp instruments. The Christian woman was able to crawl 40 ft. to her granddaughter's room, but it was already too late to help her.
Authorities are now investigating an angle which views Kaur as a victim of radical Sikhs who want revenge for sacrilege.
Kaur's husband Labh Singh told the Indian Express that the desecration incident prompted their family to leave their home and seek refuge at a relative's home. They only came back two months ago. He also highlighted his late wife's mental disabilities, saying it was clear that Kaur was not in control of herself when she went to the Sikh temple that day.
"We would have taken precautions had we known there was a threat to her life," Singh told the Express. "She worked as a labourer all her life. She even worked as a volunteer in the construction of the village gurdwara [Sikh temple]."
Meanwhile, International Christian Concern (ICC) has warned that Christians in the Telangana state in India's northern region are facing increasing persecution from Hindu nationalists. The charity said there have been 25 reported cases of serious persecution, and the attacks have resulted in the hospitalization of believers in recent months, Premier reports.
ICC added that the outbreak of violent attacks has caused the local residents to live in fear and anxiety. Just last month, eight members of the Brethren Church were reportedly attacked and tortured before being left in the street to bleed.
