USA: University of Oregon scrubs name of KKK leader from building

 It was about time.

The University of Oregon has finally decided to remove the name of a KKK leader from one of its campus dormitories.

University President Michael Schill announced the decision Thursday and said the college’s board of trustees unanimously concluded that Frederic Dunn — a classics professor by day and an “exalted cyclops” of the Ku Klux Klan by night — no longer deserved to have his name emblazoned across a student dorm.

“It would be inconsistent with our values to have a building named after an exalted cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan,” Schill told the Register-Guard.

Dunn, who died in 1937, was the leader of a KKK unit in nearby Eugene.

The university’s Black Student Task Force demanded Dunn’s name be stripped from the building last November.

Quinn Haaga, the student body president, implored the board to act swiftly in the wake of the death of Larnell Bruce last month. Bruce, a black 19-year-old, was deliberately run over by a white supremacist in Gresham, Ore., on Aug. 10, according to police reports.
