Algiers (TOA): Algeria's Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Mohamed Aissa, says in coming days he’ll work hard to prosecute the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community the Algerian Security Service have arrested last Friday for performing Friday prayers at a private villa.
The arrests were made under the pretext of ‘public security’.
The Algerian Security Services arrested 20 members of the Ahmadiyya community in the city of Skikda last Friday, after the worshipers had performed Friday prayers in a private home.
According to a CNN report, Minister Aissa said in a press statement Tuesday that the Ministry has decided to pursue members of 'this' community [Ahmadiyyas] "to reduce such phenomena and to eliminate the deviation at its root."
Ministry said the arrests by the Security Services came after consecutive surveillance operations.
Last June, the Algerian Gendarmerie Nationale had arrested nine people of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community from Blida, claiming the arrests were vital to its security and stability because Ahmadiyya is a departure from the religious approach prevailing in the country.
Minister Aissa had indicated in June that the government was 'doing everything to stop Ahmadiyya' teachings in Algeria, The AlNiha'ar TV had reported.
In 2014, a private intelligence reporting firm, Stratfor, had reported that the Algerian government was 'reaching out' to the members of the Islamist movement.
Islamit movements in Algeria are associated mostly with Wahhabism and Salafism.
Stratfor had analyzed that Algerian policies will oscillate between Salafists and Muslim Brotherhood-type groups.
Startfor had also confirmed Algiers' outreach to long-banned Islamist group the Islamic Salvation Front, known by its French acronym, FIS.
