Meet the humble nutritional powerhouse

If you said ‘ghee’ and ‘healthy’ together in a sentence just a decade back, you would be met with scorn and horror. It was considered stinky, artery clogging and unhealthy, but today, everyone—from Kourtney Kardashian to Haryanvi wrestlers—are touting the benefits of this liquid gold. “Ghee is unique as it has medium chain triglycerides, which help burn belly fat and increase metabolism,” says Delhi-based sports nutritionist Dr Lovneet Batra. And even though the fatty acids in ghee are saturated, research shows that it reduces the risk of heart disease and increases good cholesterol.

But that’s not all. This wonder fat is a staple among athletes around the world because it strengthens joints, makes connective tissue more flexible, and also increases the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. And the best part is that unlike other fats, which can upset your system, ghee helps soothe the colon and the digestive tract. According to Dr Batra, “it doesn’t tax your liver as opposed to other oils, so it’s good for people recovering from disease. In fact, it has a detoxifying effect on the liver.”

While ayurveda recommends pouring ghee raw over food (instead of cooking with it) to get maximum benefits, many experts feel that it is beneficial any way you use it. As ghee has a very high smoking point, you can perhaps cook in it without fear of its active ingredients getting destroyed.

Personally, I eat ghee every day. I have a tablespoon first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a hefty pinch of turmeric and one crushed black peppercorn to heal yoga injuries. And I mix it in my dal during lunch. Ghee has always been on trend for me, not least because of my grandfather, who had it every day till he died at the age of 96, with all his hair and all his teeth intact, looking like Harrison Ford.
