Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday endorsed death sentences of eight terrorists involved in killing of Sabeen Mahmud, security personnel, abduction of Chinese engineers besides carrying out an attack on members of Ismaili community in Karachi’s Safoora Goth.
“COAS confirmed death sentence of 8 terrorists, 3 others awarded imprisonment. Convicts involved Safoora, Sabeen, Chinese engineers & LEAs,” DG Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor said in a tweet.

According to the military’s media wing, the terrorists, tried by the military courts, were involved in killing of 90 persons and injuring 99 others. “Explosives were also recovered from their possession,” said the ISPR.
The development came less than two weeks after General Bajwa approved the death sentences of 13 militants allegedly involved in carrying out an attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsada among other terror offenses.
Mahmud, the director and founder of The Second Floor (T2F) cafĂ©, had been shot dead in Karachi’s Korangi area in September 2015. In the same year, at least 45 people, including women and children, belonging to the Ismaili community were killed when around a half a dozen gunmen sprayed them with bullets in execution style inside a bus near Safoora Chowrangi.
Details of convicts provided by the ISPR:
- Hafiz Muhammad Umar alias Jawad S/O Afzal Ahmed, Ali Rehman alias Pano/Tona S/O Asifur Rehman, Abdul Salam alias Tayyab/Rizwan Azeem S/O Muhammad Nazar ul Islam and Khurram Shafique alias Abdullah Mansoor/Abdullah Mansuri S/O Muhammad Shafiq. These four convicts were members of a proscribed organization and were involved in Safoora carnage. They were also involved in killing of Sabeen Mahmud.
- Muslim Khan S/O Abdul Rasheed. The convict was spokesperson of a proscribed organization. He was involved in killing of innocent civilians, attacking Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan. He was also involved in kidnapping two Chinese Engineers and a local civilian.
- Muhammad Yousaf S/O Khalid Khan. The convict was a member of a proscribed organization. He was involved in attacking Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan.
- Saif Ullah S/O Naseeb Hussain. The convict was a member of a proscribed organization. He was involved in killing of innocent civilians and attacking Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan.
- Bilal Mehmood S/O Qari Mehmood Ul Hassan. The convict was a member of a proscribed organization. He was involved in attacking Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan.
- Sartaj Ali S/O Bakht Afsar. The convict was a member of a proscribed organization. He was involved in providing funds to the terrorists for terrorist activities. He was awarded imprisonment for life.
- Mehmood Khan S/O Bakht Buland. The convict was a member of a proscribed organization. He was involved in kidnaping a Chinese engineer for ransom. He was awarded rigorous imprisonment for twenty years.
- Fazal-e-Ghaffar S/O Aqil Khan. The convict was a member of a proscribed organization. He was involved in attacking Police Station Shamozai during which police officials and Frontier Constabulary soldiers were abducted from the said police station. He was awarded rigorous imprisonment for twenty years.
