A mass shooting at a Quebec City mosque Sunday night that left six worshippers dead and more wounded has created a wave of shock and disbelief across the country.

In Nova Scotia, reaction to the terrorist attacks has poured in from politicians, police officers and members of the Islamic community.

“What we’re going through is extreme sadness,” said Umran Bhatti, Imam at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and a resident of Sydney.

“At the same time, we’re hoping to expand and help people understand the true, beautiful teachings of Islam.”

Bhatti said he has received emails and phone calls from the people of Cape Breton expressing sympathies. Chief Peter McIsaac of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service reached out to Bhatti to ensure that his people would be safe.

“I’m very happy that I got this kind of a response from the community,” he said. “It shows that hatred and violence cannot separate us.”

Sunday’s attack comes just three days after the new administration in Washington closed its borders temporarily to refugees from a number of Muslim countries.

Premier Stephen McNeil took to Twitter Monday morning to express his sympathies and denounce the attack as a “senseless act of violence.”
