UK: Walton teenager appears in court accused of starting fire at Baitul Futuh mosque


Shocked onlookers watched as it took 70 firefighters five hours to tackle the blaze. The street was shut off as the fire raged but the mosque reopened a week later.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Wimbledon Youth Court

A 16-year-old boy from Walton has appeared in court accused of starting a huge blaze at a mosque that caused £6m worth of damage.

Flames tore through administrative buildings adjacent to the Baitul Futuh mosque, believed to be the largest in Western Europe, on London Road, Morden in south London, on September 26, 2015.

Shocked onlookers watched as it took 70 firefighters five hours to tackle the blaze. The street was shut off as the fire raged but the mosque reopened a week later.
