Following the tragic attack at a Quebec City mosque that left six men dead and five others critically injured, Muslim communities across Canada opened their doors to their neighbours.
On Friday, during the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Saskatoon’s afternoon prayers, non-Muslims were encouraged to visit the Darur Rahmat place of worship, located in Saskatoon’s East College Park neighbourhood.
Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Saskatoon missionary Khalid Minhas said the event was a chance for people to meet members of the Muslim community face-to-face.
“The majority of people and the majority of our neighbours, they have never been to a mosque and they have only heard about a mosque from different sources, like media and others,” he said.
“We thought it would be a good opportunity to come and visit and experience firsthand how it is to be in a mosque. Whenever you hear about a good food dish, you’d like to taste it. Hearing about a good food or a good restaurant does not let you experience the actual thing.”
A news release from Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada said communities across the country have shown solidarity with Muslims, highlighting the “true Canadian Spirit.”
Minhas said that support is also felt in Saskatoon.
“As a Canadian Ahmadiyya Muslim, I feel very proud, and I am very content and very happy to see the reaction of our friends and neighbours here in Canada,” he said.
On Tuesday, hundreds of Saskatoon residents gathered at City Square to show support for the local Muslim community. A second show of support is set to take place in the form of a rally Saturday at 2 p.m. in Friendship Park.
