Vatican City: Pope Francis’ award to abortion advocate linked directly to Donald Trump
At the same time as the March for Life, Pope Francis, ironically, is also embroiled in a controversy over the same issue — with a direct connection to Mr Trump.

The juxtaposition is extraordinary.
On Friday, on the eve of the first anniversary of his inauguration on Friday, Donald Trump stood in the White House Rose Garden and via satellite, addressed Washington’s March for Life a few blocks away.
Now in its 45th year, the annual anti-abortion rally regularly draws crowds of 100,00 or more from across the US. Some years, it exceeds the estimated 250,000 who witnessed Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream’’ speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963.
At the same time as the March for Life, Pope Francis, ironically, is also embroiled in a controversy over the same issue — with a direct connection to Mr Trump.
A week ago, as The Australian reported, the Holy See press office, after persistent queries from journalists, confirmed that one of the world’s most influential pro-abortion lobbyists and fundraisers, Dutch politician and former government minister Lilianne Ploumen, had received a prestigious papal honour — Commander in the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great.
The award is normally given for “personal service to the Holy See and to the Roman Catholic Church, through (the recipient’s) unusual labours, their support of the Holy See, and their excellent examples set forth in their communities and their countries”.
Ploumen certainly sets an example.
The connection between her and Trump is the president’s reinstatement, during his first week in office, of the Mexico City Policy. That Reagan-era policy that blocks US funding for non-governmental organisations that provide abortion counselling or referrals, advocate to decriminalise abortion or expand abortion services in the developing world. Trump mentioned it in his Rose Garden speech.
