MUSLIM women in the UK will be allowed to continue wearing the burka - after it was deemed "rather un-British" to ban it.
Immigration minister Damian Green said the Government would not follow the example of France, which approved a veto.
A YouGov poll last week found that two-thirds of Brits want burkas made illegal.
Tory MP Philip Hollobone has tabled a private members' bill which would ban people from covering their face in public.
He says it is "offensive" for women to be denied face-to-face contact. Mr Green insisted the coalition would not pass laws enforcing a dress code.
He said: "Telling people what they can and can't wear is a rather un-British thing to do.
"We're a tolerant and mutually respectful society. It's very unlikely and it would be undesirable for the British parliament to try and pass a law dictating what people wore."

In related news, MUSLIM bus drivers and cabbies will not be allowed to ban guide dogs because they consider them "unclean", Transport Minister Norman Baker said.
