WASHINGTON—A Muslim group said Thursday that it would donate copies of the Koran around the United States as a peaceful protest for each one burned by a Florida church.
The Ahmadi community, a minority in Pakistan, said it would give out copies of the Islamic holy book to libraries and universities and hold events honoring all religions' sacred texts.
Nasim Rehmatullah, vice president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, condemned plans by Florida's tiny Dove World Outreach Center to torch copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks but said Muslims should respond peacefully.
"Here in the United States, we don't burn books," Rehmatullah said in a statement.
"We read them freely and debate their content. As Muslims who stand for peace, we proclaim the holiness of all sacred scriptures and invite everyone to an open dialogue on the Holy Koran."
Islamic hardliners have frequently targeted the Ahmadis, who are considered non-Muslims under Pakistani law due to views that differ with mainstream Islam.
Gunmen stormed two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore in May, killing more than 80 people, and later raided the hospital where victims were being treated.
