Santa’s elves are sprouting up all over the city and giving to the less fortunate on this last weekend before Christmas.
Low-income families with children attending an Edmonton Catholic School were among the recipients of the yuletide goodwill.
They were given a surprise Saturday, when Jackie Dahlen, principal of St. Gabriel school, along with her students, delivered food hampers to their homes.
Each class was assigned a family-in-need and the children created hampers by giving items that they thought would be useful. In total, the kids made 230 hampers.
“Getting the kids involved in giving, gets them to think about it,” said Lori Nagy, spokeswoman for Edmonton Catholic Schools.
“It hits home, and they learn lifelong values.”
On the east side of the city, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, was busy packing trucks with 4,000 pounds of food raised for the Edmonton Food Bank.
Shameem Ahmed, spokesman for the Hadi Mosque at 7005 98 Ave., said the fundraiser is a Canada-wide event that brings in 60,000 pounds of donated food annually.
“We are a part of this community and simply want to help those in need,” said Ahmed.
“After all, it is the season of giving.”
Nearby, McNally High School held its 19th annual pancake breakfast for the Adopt-A-Teen program on Friday. Funds collected go to the Christmas Bureau, which gives out Wal-Mart gift certificates to kids 13 to 17 year olds from disadvantaged families. Guests included Mayor Stephen Mandel, members of the Edmonton Eskimos, Edmonton Oil Kings and, of course, Santa Claus.
