City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia showed their commitment to saving lives by donating blood on Sunday, Sept. 4, with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.
“Individuals who Commit for Life by donating once a quarter do help ensure a healthy blood supply,” Parker said. “What we do when we give blood is we acknowledge something greater – because we can share blood, we are acknowledging our common humanity.”
Both Mayor Parker and Sheriff Garcia said they are regular blood donors, and the City of Houston and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are among The Blood Center’s most productive Commit for Life blood drive groups.

During the month of September, community organizations across the United States are partnering with Muslims for Life to host blood drives, with a goal of collecting 10,000 units of blood—enough to help save as many as 30,000 lives.
“We hope that when people think of Muslims, they think of the 30,000 lives we helped save,” said Dr. Amir Malik, chapter president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
Here in the Houston area, the campaign is off to a good start, with the Sept. 4 drive bringing in 44 donors and 28 units. For more information, and a list of drives, visit http://www.muslimsforlife.org/.
