Alhaji Aliu Mahama born on 3rd March 1946 in Yendi was Vice-President of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January 2009. He was Sixty-Six (66)-Years of age.

Several hundreds of Ghanaians joined hands to say their final farewells to the former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama at a funeral service held at the Independence Square.
The two and a half hour ceremony was simple yet laden with several religious and cultural activities such as the recitation of Muslim prayers.
Several dignitaries including the former President of the Republic, John Agyekum Kufuor, Former President, Jerry John Rawlings, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum, Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood,and several others.

The Ameer (head) and Missionary-in-charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana, Maulvi Dr. A. Wahab Adam delivered the closing prayer.

"We are not alone in this time of grief and sorrow... Words cannot describe our sorrow at this time."

The remains of the late Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Aliu Mahama will be laid to rest today.
He is to be buried in Tamale on the afternoon of Sunday 18th November 2012.
The burial will however be preceded by a funeral service on Sunday morning at the Independence Square in Accra from 9 AM.
