As an immigrant from a Muslim country (Pakistan) where religious freedom is denied to minorities of all stripes (Hindus, Christians and minority Muslims like Ahmadiyya), I feel somewhat ambivalent about celebrating Thanksgiving Day.
On one hand, I am extremely grateful to be living in a country where I have the freedom to practice my religion. On the other hand, an elementary study of Native American history is enough to recognize the pain and suffering imposed on them. However, as a Muslim, one of the things I have come to realize is that it is best to understand history and look forward to a healthier future.
If we can, for example, eliminate poverty and continue to promote equality, it can serve as great steps forward to correct a historical wrong. That would be an achievement worthy of the spirit of celebrating Thanksgiving.
