This is Nelson Mandela's third time in hospital this year

The emergency ambulance carrying Nelson Mandela to hospital two weeks ago broke down, the South African presidential spokesman says.

He confirmed that the vehicle had engine trouble and that the former president was transferred to another ambulance in freezing temperatures.

But he said there was no threat to Mr Mandela as he was surrounded by intensive care nurses the whole time.

American network CBS quotes sources as saying he had to wait for 40 minutes.

Mr Mandela, 94, was admitted to hospital in Pretoria with a lung infection, in a serious condition, in the early hours of 8 June.

President Jacob Zuma has said his health continues to improve but his condition remains serious.

Mr Mandela has been in intensive care since he was taken to hospital for the third time this year.

After leading the struggle against white minority rule under the apartheid system, he became South Africa's first black president in 1994.
