Canada: Ahmadiyya Muslims gather at International Centre
“True Islam is one that promotes tolerance. The Holy Qur’an condemns murder in the strongest possible words ... Whosoever kills a person, it as if he has killed all of mankind, unless it is as punishment for killing another person for causing disorder in the land."

MISSISSAUGA - As many as 20,000 Muslims were expected at the International Centre this weekend to hear speeches devoted to peace.
The 37th annual convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslims in the GTA also drew 50 dignitaries, including Missisauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, long-time Toronto mayor Sen. Art Eggleton, Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak, all sharing the stage with a selection of speakers on Saturday.
The Ahmadiyya are a sect of Islam that preach world peace with a motto of “Love for all, hatred for none.”
They are persecuted elsewhere in the world — in Pakistan, they are seen as heretics and are not allowed to identify themselves as Muslims — and believe the Messiah returned as Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who founded the sect in the late 19th century.
The group is firmly opposed to violent jihad, believing it not only gives all Muslims a bad name, but also that it goes against the teachings of the Qur’an.
Maulana Farhan Iqbal, a missionary from York Region, conveyed that message during a guest speech Saturday, saying the Qur’an condemns murder.
“There is no room whatsoever for extremism in the religion of Islam,” Iqbal said.
“True Islam is one that promotes tolerance. The Holy Qur’an condemns murder in the strongest possible words ... Whosoever kills a person, it as if he has killed all of mankind, unless it is as punishment for killing another person for causing disorder in the land.
“It is very clear in its condemnation of violence and murder and any compulsion in the name of religion.”
The Ahmadiyya were so successful at drawing dignitaries that McCallion joked: “They get more politicians together than anybody.”
Eggleton was prestented with the Zarfulla Khan Award for Public Service.
The long-time Ahmadiyya supporter said he was honoured and it will help inspire to keep giving back in the public service.
