July Fourth Star Spangled Spectacular on Hollywood Beach was planned by the City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts to host a celebration of the nation’s 237th birthday with fun for all. The streets around the venue were flocked with throngs of people who had gathered to enjoy this day of recreation. Parking was scarce and people walked long stretches to arrive at the venue. However, nothing dampened the festive spirit.
America is a melting pot of cultures and faiths who cherish the liberties and freedoms that this great nation offers. The tragedy of 9/11, almost a decade ago and the Boston bombings earlier this year have drawn attention towards American Muslims and allowed their fellow countrymen to question whether they really embody the spirit of American nationalism. For majority of Muslim Americans the answer is in the affirmative. Islam is a universal religion and its teachings transcend the bounds of time and age. There are clear injunctions in the Holy Quran that expound this topic:
"O ye who believe! Obey God, and obey His Messenger and those who are in authority among you." - (4:60)
Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA has launched a campaign ‘Muslims for Loyalty’ to demonstrate this spirit - that Muslims are obliged to be loyal to their nation. It is not mere lip-service rather the fulfillment of a core religious responsibility. A Muslim’s faith is incomplete without adhering to the teachings of the Holy Quran and the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who stated:
“Love of one’s country of residence is part of faith”.
Embodying this spirit, members of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Miami joined the festivities of July Fourth on Hollywood Beach. They handed out American flags to visitors who appreciated the gesture and responded with positive feedback. It was an amazing sight – the beach was flooded with throngs of people participating in the July Fourth extravaganza. They were a heterogeneous group who belonged to different races, faiths and colors but amidst the red, blue and white of the thousands of American flags, this was inconsequential. All that mattered was that they embodied the American spirit enshrined in the Pledge of Allegiance:
“..... allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
Long Live America!
