Pakistan must end persecution of Ahmadi Muslim sect

The persecution of members of this community is based on the Pakistani Constitution, which denies them the right to profess their faith. Any association with Islam is punishable by imprisonment or capital punishment.

Dr. Mehdi Ali Qamar, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community and renowned cardiologist from Pickerington, was brutally murdered last Monday because of his faith in his hometown of Rabwah, Pakistan ( Dispatch article, Tuesday).

He was a father of three boys and a firm believer in the Quranic injunction, “Whoso gave life to a person, it shall be as if he gave life to all mankind” (Ch. 5:33).

It was because of his ardent desire to serve humanity in need that he made a three-week voluntary trip to render cardiac services at the Tahir Heart Institute in Rabwah. Yet on the second day of his mission, two gunmen shot him outside the Ahmadiyya Cemetery in front of his wife and his toddler son.

He is the 137th martyr of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in the past four years. The persecution of members of this community is based on the Pakistani Constitution, which denies them the right to profess their faith. Any association with Islam is punishable by imprisonment or capital punishment.

It is hoped that the international community will appeal to the Pakistani government to end persecution against the peace-loving Ahmadiyya Muslim community.
