A Muslim peace exhibition is due to be held which aims to address misconceptions of Islam in the wake of the Paris attacks.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which has a branch in Walthamstow, is inviting the public to the event on Saturday at Wanstead Library, in Spratt Hall Road.
Coordinator of the group, Karim Hayat, said: “It is so important seeing what happened in France and everyone at the Ahmaddiyya Muslim Community is completely against violence.
“It is against the teaching of Muslims and is not something we believe in, so we want to make that clear in this exhibition. It was a barbaric act by a small minority.
Mr Hayat admitted he was uncomfortable about the front page of the new Charlie Hebdo magazine, which depicts Muhammad crying and holding a sign saying “Je suis Charlie”.
He said: “I think I speak for all Muslims in saying I was unhappy with the image of Muhammed being used, I think it is sending the wrong message.
“But we need to explain to people why this is offensive, not by violence but by speaking to them. This is one of the things we will be talking about."
The Mayor of Redbridge, Cllr Ashley Kissin, will attend the event, which will run from 10am to 4pm.
