New Delhi: In a big relief for the family of Jesuit priest Alexis Prem Kumar, Indian government has secured his release after eight months of captivity in Afghanistan.
The news was confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, CNN-IBN-Live, has reported.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, according to a report published in Newsweek Pakistan, an official at the Indian embassy in Kabul said Kumar was “in good health, and in good condition.”
India’s foreign ministry, meanwhile, said Kumar “is now back in the safety of his homeland and arrangements are being made for him to rejoin his family soon.”
“The matter of his release has been pursued by our leadership, including at the highest levels the prime minister,” the ministry statement was quoted by Newsweek.
Kumar, who was working with an NGO, was abducted in Herat province in June, 2014 while he was on his way to a project site.
Kumar was travelling despite an advisory to all Indians not to travel outside Herat city after the attack on the Indian consulate a week and a half ago.
