Grimsby Public Art Gallery to host open house Feb. 21

GRIMSBY — In the highly charged arena of extremism, misconceptions can run rampant.

But a religious organization is doing its best to dispel those myths.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is coming to Grimsby this Saturday to hold a Holy Quran open house. The event is meant to educate people on the true teachings of Islam, battle Islamophobia and show people that Islam does not support nor promote terrorism, said Noman Khalil, national executive director, department of faith outreach for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

"With the recent terrorist acts of extremist groups, such as ISIS and Al-Qaida, who have launched terrorist attacks on Canada's Parliament Hill and France's Magazine Charlie Hebdo through recruitment and radicalization, it has become very important to condemn terrorism and dispel misconceptions about Islam," he said in an email.

The open houses are taking place in 33 cities and towns across Canada. Visitors will learn about what the Quran says about freedom of speech and blasphemy, and whether the holy book actually gives any justification for the attacks at Charlie Hebdo and in Canada.

The open house runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery, 18 Carnegie Lane, in Grimsby.
