Nigeria: Ahmadi Muslim Youth Popoola Olamilekan Receives Commonwealth Peace Ambassador Award

The leadership of the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) has conferred a PEACE AMBASSADOR Award on the Hon. Popoola Isiaka Olamilekan, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community of Nigeria.

Mr Olamilekan also serves as a member of the Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, youth wing of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

The event which took place in Abuja on February 3, 2015, was part of the activities to launch the CYC’s project entitled, “Youth Campaign Against Election Violence (Y-CAEV).”

The event also featured the commissioning of 36 young Nigerians as Peace Marshals and endorsement of Abuja Youth Peace Accord. All these activities were targeted towards ensuring a non-Violence, credible, free and fair 2015 general elections in Nigeria.

In his remark at the Y-CAEV launch event, Hon. Popoola Olamilekan expressed that youths play an active roll in every aspect of the electioneering process, prior, during and after the elections. "This demographic strength has placed us at a very strategic position towards achieving success in the forthcoming Nigeria’s general elections."

"As Commonwealth Peace Ambassador," Hon. Olamilekan continued, "it is my responsibility to promote the message of peaceful coexistence and elections in Nigeria and other Commonwealth nations."

"I intend to achieve this by conveying a message of hope to teeming Nigerian Youths and beyond."

Hon. Popoola Olamilekan asked all the stakeholders in electioneering processes to live above the boards. "Only then we can all achieve zero level of election violence and zero cost of lives and properties.”

Hon. Popoola Olamilekan is an international youth development consultant with specific interests in effective leadership, democracy and good governance.

The Commonwealth Youth Council is a platform that contributes to the achievement of the objectives of the Commonwealth by promoting mutual collaboration among young people, and working in partnership with state and non- state actors  in  order  to  empower the  young  people of  the  Commonwealth, without distinction of race, ethnic origin, caste, colour, sex,  gender, sexual orientation, disability, special needs, socio-economic status, marital status, language, religious belief or political opinion.

CYC represents the interest of over 1.2 billion young people across the 53 Commonwealth countries.
