“It's just a good way to open up the dialogue. We're starting to see so much divide amongst people. Canadians, especially, should come together so we can learn from each other and hear everyone's concerns.”

In an effort to dispel any myths surrounding Islam, local Muslims are hosting an open house at the Painswick Public Library on Saturday.
Imam Umar Akbar, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said local Muslims in each of its 86 chapters across Canada are inviting people of other faiths to join them for a conversation about the teachings of the Quran.
“It's just a good way to open up the dialogue. We're starting to see so much divide amongst people. Canadians, especially, should come together so we can learn from each other and hear everyone's concerns,” Akbar said.
He said the January terrorist killings in France at the Charles Hebdo magazine and surrounding area when 12 people died, and the Oct. 22 attack on Parliament Hill in Ottawa by a homegrown radical Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who fatally shot Corp. Nathan Cirillo (before he was killed by Sergeant at Arms, Kevin Vickers), have brought Islamophobia to a new level.
Akbar said the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community youth group wants to explain that Islam does not support nor promote terrorism.
In November, Akbar met with Counc. Peter Silveira, Rabbi Mendell Nakkar and several Christian representatives at an interfaith breakfast to share their views on how to establish peace.
“We had good conversations. We may have disagreed on some theological points, but we had some very good discussions,” he said.
The Holy Quran Open House will be held Saturday, March 14 between noon and 4 p.m. at the Barrie Painswick Public Library on 48 Dean Ave., in Barrie's southend.
