THE idea there are 72 virgins awaiting radicalised Muslim terrorists when they are killed is “an entire fabrication” of Islamic teachings, according to a Western Sydney imam.

St Marys imam Kamran Mubashir Tahir, 25, one of the youngest religious leaders in Sydney, said Islam was about “serving mankind”.

He completed his Ahmadiyya Muslim education in England during 2014 and, despite having never lived in Australia, moved to Sydney five months ago to join the mosque of 250 Muslims.

Imam Kamran plays soccer, cycles, attends a local gym, has run a marathon and enjoys using his selfie stick to take pictures. Through these interests he hopes to connect with youth in the area to prevent them from becoming disillusioned and vulnerable to IS recruiters.

Imam Kamran said he was saddened by the way Islam is manipulated by radicals, who speak of 72 virgins awaiting terrorists who are killed fighting, and other falsehoods. “Please show me where that quote has been made in our Holy Scripture or where it has been said by the Holy Prophet,” he said.

“It is an entire fabrication made to use in their interest in their own propaganda to get them to go and do these silly and stupid acts.”
