I was dismayed to hear the words “Islam hates us” uttered from the Republican presidential front-runner. Not because I’m a registered Democrat (I am not), not because I am a Muslim, but because I am the “us” he refers to – an American.

I was born in this country, raised by immigrant parents who came to seek a better life of opportunity and religious freedom and worked hard to achieve the American Dream. I am a practicing Ahmadi Muslim who follows the teaching of Islam, which says to love your country, honor your country and defend your country.

I implore Donald Trump to reconsider his words and take this as a pivotal opportunity to understand Islam and educate his base on the distinction between an entire religion, and the misguided beliefs of a minority who defame it.
