FARNHAM town centre is looking greatly improved thanks to the efforts of the 50 people who took part in a ‘Clean for the Queen’ tidy up.

The Farnham in Bloom community group, children, parents and teachers from Potters Gate and Badshot Lea Schools, Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) UK, local residents, councillors and staff from Waterfords Estate Agents collected 25 sacks of rubbish.

Some of the items included a child’s scooter, part of a car bumper, hub cap, bottles, cans and a worker’s warning light.

Stephen Hill, the town council’s lead member for community enhancement, said: “We were delighted by the number of people who signed up to take part in the UK-wide initiative to ‘Clean for the Queen’.

“Teams of people cleared the area by the railway station, Hickley’s Corner, Farnham Business Park on Dogflud Way, Gostrey Meadow, Borelli Walk and around Farnham Park and South Street.

“I would like to thank everybody who took part and for helping to make Farnham fit for the Queen.”

As a small thank you for their efforts, the volunteers were treated to scones with jam and clotted cream, tea and coffee in the council chamber.

Clean for the Queen marked the start of Farnham’s first Big Pick Week for 2016. Groups from Tootsies Nursery, Farnham 6th Form College, Farnham Ramblers, Heath End Gardeners and Farnham Rotary signed up to take part the litter pick which took place between March 5 and 12.
