A massive earthquake struck Chile on Saturday morning and triggered a tsunami across the Pacific. A significant loss of human lives is expected and many homes and buildings have been destroyed, particularly in the city of Concepcion which was near the epicenter.
According to the available information, the death toll stood at 214 shortly after the earthquake.
The 8.8 magnitude tremor devastated large parts of southern Chile and huge waves raced at up to 400 miles an hour across the Pacific.
Humanity First is closely monitoring the situation and planning a first response with a medical relief team ready to leave for Chile.
Isolated ocean islands were reported to have suffered severe wave damage, and tsunami warnings were issued across a vast area stretching from Russia and Japan through to the Philippines and New Zealand.
Some five million woke up to "hell" in the Chilean capital, Santiago, where the city was jolted in the early hours of the Saturday morning.
The earthquake ripped cracks in the roads and swallowed up cars. The tremor also collapsed tower blocks and many bridges. People who were buried alive were being dig out of the rubble by the Rescue teams who worked throughout the day.
Hawaii had “dodged a bullet,” said an official at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. So far there have been no reports of serious damage in Australia or New Zealand.
