Bus advertising just the ticket for atheists
ATHEISTS have begun an advertising campaign on Melbourne buses, proclaiming ''Atheism - celebrate reason'', the first time they have entered the fray in such a public way.
The signs are on the backs of 24 buses until March 29, when the number will rise to 40 and the advertisements will be included on the sides as well, according to Atheist Foundation of Australia president David Nicholls.
''This is the first time we have advertised in public in such a big way - it's a very significant move forward for atheists,'' Mr Nicholls said.
Everyone seems to be getting on board. After the British Muslim group that took advertisements on London's double-deckers last month, a Christian groups also hired space. It spread to atheists in Spain, then other parts of Europe and the US. New Zealand atheists hope to follow suit.
The Ahmadiyya community, sparked by a survey that found a quarter of the population regarded Islam as the ''worst religion on earth'', also plans to knock on 3 million doors in a campaign to prove otherwise.
Melbourne, the latest city in the worldwide atheism campaign, is hosting an international atheism conference in two weeks.
Already sold out, it features such leading public atheists as biologist Richard Dawkins, philosophers A.C. Graying and Peter Singer, and Muslim feminist Taslima Nasrin.
''We are doing it to be part of the wider campaign, and to raise awareness that there is a thing called atheism as an option for people to look at and see if there is any value for them,'' Mr Nicholls said.
