Faith and Freedom: An army of one

If every balanced-minded and moderate Muslim will react in a dignified manner and respond sensibly when Islam is attacked or the person and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad are maligned, or Quranic versus are mischaracterized, the world will realize the right from wrong far quicker than any other type of response. The following quick thoughts by Mansura Bashir Minhas of Miami represent an example of such an effort undertaken by one individual for the good of many.

Sun-Sentanial: Terrorists distort Koran
Faisal Shahzad's recent attempt to attack Time Square raises many questions about Islam and its adherents.

His actions negate the basic Islamic principle that espouses patriotism and loyalty to one's nation and deems it to be an integral part of faith.

When radicals like him bear arms against their homeland, they betray the faith that they tout to represent.
A closer study of the Koran would reveal the extent of their distorted interpretation of Islamic teachings that outright condemn violence and bloodshed.

Miami Herald: Not according to Koran
When Faisal Shahzad tried to detonate a bomb in Times Square, he violated his oath as a U.S. citizen, a pledge that he had recently undertaken. He also betrayed a basic commandment of his faith. Not only did he deceive his country, he also failed as a Muslim. His actions were a far cry from the true teachings of Islam, which teaches followers to be faithful to their nation. Loyalty to one's homeland is a sacred commandment of the Koran, where it is an integral component of faith.

Shahzad and others like him are not true representatives of Islam, and their actions bear no semblance to its true essence.

TIME – Letters - France and the Veil
Thanks for "Spotlight: France and the Veil" [May 3]. As a Muslim woman who chooses to cover herself voluntarily, I am extremely fortunate to be living in the United States, where the Constitution guarantees and respects my personal freedom and choice to practice my faith. It is incomprehensible how a ban on the veil (observed by merely 2,000 women) can help secure France's secular tradition. It would only fuel resentment and further alienate the Muslim population in Europe.
