SARGODHA: Security has been heavily beefed up around the Sargodha Anti Terrorism Court ahead of an expected verdict in the trial of five Americans accused of plotting terrorist attacks.
The five young Muslims from Washington DC were arrested in Pakistan in December after their families reported them missing.
The US nationals – Aman, Ahmad, Waqar, Rami and Umar Farooq – were arrested from Sargodha, allegedly, trying to join Taliban in the fight against US troops in Afghanistan.
They can face life imprisonment if convicted. They deny the accusations, saying they came to Pakistan to attend a wedding and intended to travel to Afghanistan to do humanitarian work.
Prosecutors said they expect a guilty verdict, but the suspects’ lawyers insist they are innocent.
The trial is off limits to journalists and observers and is being heard by a single judge in a special anti-terrorism court.
