UK: Hounslow Muslims post peace messages on London buses

The campaign, which held a launch ceremony at Hounslow Council’s Civic Centre, on Wednesday, has already received widespread backing from the borough’s politicians.

Muslims in Hounslow are following in the footsteps of fellow communities across the capital by posting messages of peace on London buses.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association’s borough branch has also launched a doorstep leaflet campaign “to address some common misconceptions about Islam”.

Since Monday, eagle-eyed pedestrians may have spotted buses in the area adorned with posters reading: “Muslim for Loyalty, Freedom & Peace.”


Co-president of the Hounslow association, Abid Nasir, said: “The aim of the publicity campaign is to reassert true Islamic principles of peace and to counter the extremists who hijack the faith for political ends.”

Zaheer Khan, Mr Nasir’s co-president, added: “By emphasising the values highlighted in this campaign we hope to facilitate a better understanding of Islam so that people are able judge for themselves the actions of those who claim to speak and act in its good name.

“Islam stresses the promotion of peace in words and deeds.”

The association is delivering thousands of leaflets promoting its mantra in a bid to ensure every household in the borough receives the message before the end of the year.

The campaign, which held a launch ceremony at Hounslow Council’s Civic Centre, on Wednesday, has already received widespread backing from the borough’s politicians.

MP for Feltham and Heston, Alan Keen, said: “This is a perfect example of a community in action promoting peace and goodwill in the community.”

Council leader, Jagdish Sharma, described the campaign as “a fantastic opportunity to promote respect, trust and peace in this mixed multicultural community”.

Hounslow mayor Colin Ellar said: “No one can object to such beautiful messages of peace, this will be welcomed by all. I look forward to seeing the buses in Hounslow.”

The initiative is a part of a national campaign that, since January, has swept across several boroughs, including Kingston, Merton and Wandsworth. The programme continues for 10 years until all homes in every area targeted have been reached.
