Soon after its inauguration on Friday, the Ahmadiyya bookstall at the Annual Book Festival of Bangalore was an instant sensation.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Bangalore organized a large bookstall at the hugely popular Annual Book Festival – 2010, a treasure trove for book lovers for ten days, beginning on November 12.
According to MyBanglor.com, a record number of over 300 stalls from the country’s biggest publishers, distributors, exporters and importers are participating in the biggest-ever show, which is touted as India’s second largest book festival after Kolkata.
The Ahmadiyya stall displays books for sales in 7 languages, a large quantity of folders and pamphlets in English, Urdu and local Kannada languages, and many community magazines for free.
The Ahmadiyya organizers have also setup an exhibit of the Holy Quran translations in 35+ languages.
The visitors seem to enjoy the lively stall with huge banners bearing community slogans and TV screens with scenes from Muslim Television Ahmadiyya (MTA) broadcasting from London, England.
The MTA channels are broadcasting poems, documentaries about annual conventions and scenes from the coverage received by His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, supreme head of the worldwide community, when he visited in India on two previous occasions.
There are some half-a-dozen Islamic stalls at the event. Interestingly however, the only one with Kalma (Islamic creed) is the Ahmadiyya Muslim bookstall – displaying Kalma with translations in 3 languages.
Most of the visitors and even a proprietor of another Islamic stall, ‘Salam Center’ visited Ahmadiyya stall and were amazed at the Ahmadiyya banner “We have translated the Holy Quran in 70 Languages.”
The opponents of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, although few in numbers, weren’t too far behind in their opposition to the Ahmadiyya bookstall.
Few local Urdu newspapers such as Siyasat, Salaar, etc. have already sent out stern warnings to all the Muslims of Bangalore.
“Qadianiyo Ki Chaloon se Bachiya” (Beware of the Qadianis’ tricks), a headline warning read in one of the newspaper.
Some newspapers published photos of the Ahmadiyya stall in their papers.
