The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the oldest Muslim-American organization in the United States, brought its nationwide Muslims for Peace campaign to Zion and Waukegan last weekend.
Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Zion held signs that read “Love for all, hatred for none” and handed out peace brochures at various shopping districts in Waukegan. The national campaign started in New York this summer with peace ads on 100 city buses, and members of the community have been taking to the streets and going door-to-door with peace brochures all around the country ever since.
Zion resident Junayd Latif, outreach coordinator for the Zion chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, led last Saturday’s event. Close to 20 members handed out more than 800 brochures from noon to 1 p.m. and answered questions as they greeted people. Passersby greeted them with positive responses, many remarking that they appreciated Muslims speaking out against extremism.
“As Muslims who believe in the messiah, we want our fellow Americans to know that there are Muslims who condemn violence and terrorism,” said Latif. “Americans are asking, ‘Where are the moderate Muslims?’ Well, we are the moderate Muslims, and we want everyone to know that.”
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, fast-growing worldwide movement within Islam. Members exceed tens of millions in more than 195 countries around the world. It was founded in Qadian, India, in 1889 by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who Ahmadi Muslims believe is the messiah as foretold by Prophet Muhammad. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has championed the separation of mosque and state, non-violence and the end of violent jihad since its inception 121 years ago.
