The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) and the Inter-religious and International Federation for World Peace on 13th January, 2011 celebrated the World Inter-faith Harmony Week at the Grass Roots Gender Empowerment Movement (GGEM) office, John Street in Freetown.

In his statement the Amir of Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Sierra Leone, Said Rahman noted that everybody in the world worships the same God. He said the only difference is how they go about it, adding that it is very much good for people to love one another and to be united as one in their endeavors. He continued to state that his organization is very much pleased to be part of the one-day consultative workshop in celebration of that important week in the country.  He appealed to all participants to take the workshop seriously and put what they will be learning in practice in their various works places and businesses.

The President of Universal Peace Federation Madam Alice M. Kamara revealed that inter faith harmony is a very important issue that should be taken into cognizance for world peace, adding that religion or faith have also played a very significant role in the stability that reigns in the world today. She furthered that the Almighty God is the Author of peace and harmony, and hence human beings should be always grateful for that. She described Sierra Leone as a country that is rated among the leading countries that practice religious tolerance. She appealed to both religions to continue to partner as one in the interest of peace and development. She finally urged participants to continue to be loyal to their various religions or faith.

Delivering her statement Haja Afsatu Kabba, the former Government Minister revealed that the twentieth century will be remembered as the most violent period in the world because about one hundred million people were said to have lost their lives as a result of civil conflicts across the world. She said religion and faith have the power to solace people who are mostly in the state of depression. She appealed to the United Nations to start using religious means to settle conflicts in the world as it’s a very important means that can be used effectively by UN, adding that most of the means that the UN has been using is not that effective in settling peace in the world.

Haja Afsatu Kabba appealed to leaders of the world to always have it in mind that there is life after State House, and that they should always be prepared for it and should always make sure that they harmonize with people properly before they leave office. “Where there is love and harmony, poverty will not succeed in such countries,” she noted. She said though she is a Muslim and the president a Christian, they amicably worked together as one in development.

Presentation of the theme of the celebration climaxed the ceremony.
