To the editor:

Last Sunday in Indonesia, 1,500 fanatics brutally attacked a peaceful gathering of Ahmadi Muslims with machetes, heavy canes and large stones. The onslaught was motivated simply because the victims belong to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Police idly stood by as the mob destroyed properties, mercilessly beat people, and proceeded to pound the naked corpses of three Ahmadi Muslims. In response, the Supreme Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, has instructed Ahmadi Muslims to seek solace through patience and prayer, not revenge.

In the spirit of safeguarding moderate Muslims, and indeed all peace-loving people, the American government should urge Indonesia to protect its citizens regardless of their faith.
