Miraculously, all the Ahmadi-Muslims living in Japan are safe and accounted for. When the tsunami first hit, I wrote them to see if all Ahmadis are safe. It is a special gift of God that when disasters strike, Ahmadis survive.
This special miracle was noted in Pakistan during the big earthquake. In one case, a lone house remained standing high on a mountain, while the surrounding village disappeared into a chasm. When the general arrived at the top of the summit, he inquired what sect the survivors belonged to out of the possible seventy four sects of Islam. The woman who came out told him that she was an Ahmadi, by the Grace of Allah All Mighty.
The Japanese Ahmadis told me in their email that they are working hard as volunteers. Tenvir Ahmad requested your prayers for all of Japan.
The Promised Messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian once received a revelation that "the fire is our servant and the servant of our servant." This is no idle boast. One imam took this quite literally. When a row of huts caught fire, he refused to leave his home, swearing by this revelation of the Promised Messiah. His neighbors called him to leave his home, but he would not. As the fire burned the next hut, he remained steadfast. Then, the fire stopped before it touched his house.
It is always wise to have your Creator on your side when an emergency occurs. Why do Ahmadis enjoy this favor? My husband once put it like this to me: "If I keep calling my Creator by the wrong name, why should He answer?" Islam emphasizes that we should never associate partners with Allah. Similarly, Jews and Unitarian Christians stress the Oneness of God.
If you have any doubts, pray to the one who created you...and I don't mean your parents!
The increase in the number of worldwide disasters is alarming. Now that we can watch a whole country overwhelmed by a tsunami live, as never before, it is both frightening and humbling.
But we should always remember that the One who is trying to get our attention can also save us. Personally, I don't think it is out of place to have a prayer ready. The first one that comes to mind is: Oh my Creator, protect us and help us and have mercy on us.
I don't mind if you borrow that. It may become the best life raft you ever inflated.
