Dar es Salaam City mayor Dr Didas Masaburi has urged religious leaders in the country to pray for peace and harmony in the country and Africa in the wake of numerous uprisings which have resulted into violent conflicts.

He made the remarks at the weekend when he opened the 42th annual meeting of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat-Tanzania held at Chamazi in Temeke, Dar es Salaam region, which brought together Ahmadiyya community members and representatives of other religions as well as organisations.

The meeting was convened to discuss issues related to strengthening peace, tranquility and instilling the culture of tolerance among society members in the country.

Masaburi said religious leaders had a crucial role to play in creating mutual understanding, peace as well as building good relations and tolerance among Tanzanians belonging to different ethnic backgrounds.

“Tolerance is one important component in enhancing peace and harmony in our society. As religious leaders, you are better placed, through your regular meetings like this, to pray for peace in Tanzania and the entire African continent,” he said.

Dr Masaburi stressed: “Concerted and joint efforts are needed to restore peace and get rid of politically-motivated conflicts in Africa.”

He hailed the Ahmadiyya community for showing direction on the best way to building love and good relations, preserving peace and trangulity among Tanzanians, calling on other religious institutions to follow suit.

The Mayor said the government recognised the contribution of religious institutions such as Ahmadiyya Muslim-Jamaat, in supporting national initiatives aimed at improving education, health, and water sectors.

He showered praise on the community for constructing public water wells and conducting research studies on water-borne diseases.

For his part, Amir and Missionary in-charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat-Tanzania, Sheikh Tahir Mohmood Chaudhry, said since its inception way back in 1930s, the community had been cooperating with different religions, government and the general public in speeding up social and economic development.

According to him, the meeting which attracted more tan 2500 people was convened to discuss, at lengthy, the role of human beings in respecting God’s principles and teachings in daily life.

“Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat-Tanzania was established in 1934, and our operational systems allow us to respect and value development initiatives pioneered by the government, ordinary people, and all religious institutions…in brief, we (Ahmadiyya) are a friend of everybody in this country,” observed.
