MARYLAND: Imam Shamshad from the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Chino, Calif., along with several Ahmadiyya Muslims and Sierra Leoneans, celebrated the 50th anniversary of Sierra Leone’s independence from Britain Oct. 16 in Silver Spring, Maryland, at the Baitur Rahman Mosque.
During the celebration, Dr. Ahsanullah Zafar, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, addressed the audience and reinforced the significance of continuing to help members of the community and press for higher education. Parts of the Holy Quran were also recited along with the singing of the national anthem.
Ambassadors, dignitaries, and members of the embassy were present at the event.
Several speakers lauded the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in continuing to provide free access to education in Sierra Leone while implementing changes to help the Western African country grow.
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the U.S., Bockarie Stevens, also provided a brief history of Sierra Leone, highlighting the vast achievements and accomplishments since its independence in 1961.
