Germany: Imam preaches at Canisius Jesuits community Church near Berlin

Imam explained you do not fast to give up the food, but you do it for God's sake. Fasting serves, says the Imam, to "wipe off dust from the soul" and there is more time devoted to  prayers and reading of the Holy Koran.

It is rare for a Muslim to deliver a sermon in a Catholic church. But that is what already happened last Sunday in the Berlin Canisius Jesuits community where the theme of the event was Lent, Ramadan - and Greece.

Imam Abdul Basit Tariq from the Khadija Mosque of the Ahmadiyya community in Pankow-Heinersdorf was a guest of the Jesuit community in the Charlottenburg St. Canisius.

The Lietzensee parish uses occasions of Lent vespers (the sunset evening prayer service), says Father Joachim Gimbler, for delivering Lenten sermons for the interfaith entitled, "Fasting is also in other religions".

On each Sunday of Lent congregation will explore reasons why fasting is prescribed in other religions and denominations.

On Sunday a Mulsim Imam, Abdul Basit Tariq, explained his experience of the Ramadan.

"It is a very good feeling to deliver a lecture in a church," said Imam Tariq as he stood before the altar wearing the black velvet cap with his suit.

For Muslims, fasting is a "divine help in purifying one's soul," said the Imam.

Imam explained you do not fast to give up the food, but you do it for God's sake.

Fasting serves, says the Imam, to "wipe off dust from the soul" and there is more time devoted to  prayers and reading of the Holy Koran.

"Those who do not work hard to improve their lives, Allah will reject their fast," said the imam.

Imam also pointed out that fasting is a good preparation for bad times.

"It was difficult to accept the austerity measures, is why the Greeks did not understand it" Said Abdul Basit Tariq. "If people are accustomed to a certain time in the year to be hungry, they are well prepared for a rainy day."
