Cianjur, West Java. Twenty men have been named suspects in the Friday attack on a mosque used by Ahmadiyah sect members in Cipeuyeum village, Cianjur, West Java, police said.

“Though we have not yet detained them, the suspects are obliged to report to us periodically. Up till now, we are still collecting data and investigating the motive behind the attack,” Cianjur Police Chief Agus Tri Heriyanto said on Tuesday.

According to police, one of the suspects, Asep, admitted that he and his associates had committed the attack, but they had done it because the Ahmadiyah members insisted on conducting their religious services in the neighborhood.

“We warned them several times not to continue their activities. But they kept doing it,” Asep said.

The attackers, residents of neighboring Cisaar village, wrecked the roof, broke the windows and generally ransacked the mosque, leaving it in shambles.

  1. Extremists are showing their strength in Indonesian society by harming Ahmadis. As a Pakistani my advice to Indonesians is that they should not give any space to these extremists to affect society. Today they are establishing a social attitude of taking law into their hands and harming people, tomorrow they will become a big problem for Indonesian State.
