Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) may have “startled and shocked” many in Pakistan by arranging, what some have dubbed as the country’s biggest-ever women exclusive’ rally in Karachi.
MQM has claimed it was the "biggest women gathering in the political history of the world."
The rally entitled "Empowered Women, Strong Pakistan" pulled in tens of thousands of women, multiple outlets of Pakistan's news media had reported.
According to some estimates between 500,000 and 600,000 women gathered at the Bagh-i Quaid-e Azam, beside the tomb of the father of the nation Quaid-e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, on Sunday, 19th February 2012.
“Women of all ages visited the gathering with great interest and listened to the speech of the charismatic leader with attention,” MQMONLINE website wrote.
“MQM shows ‘liberal face’ of Pakistan,” one of Pakistan’s leading newspapers commented.
Pakistan’s popular English daily, Express Tribune, wrote: “In a country where women continue to be marginalized politically, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement put its best foot forward on Sunday by organizing a mammoth all-women public rally themed ‘Empowered Women, Strong Pakistan’.”
"It was as if the MQM was letting the up-and-coming parties like the PTI know just who is in charge of the country’s largest city and financial centre, Karachi. In a country where women are often marginalised and their political participation curtailed, this was a heartening display," Express Tribune again wrote in an editorial
MQM’s chief Altaf Hussain said if Pakistan is to be transformed into a strong state, then “we have to empower our women.”
Some claim the massive public meeting has silenced the people who had thought Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaf leader Imran Khan and JUI chief Fazal-ur Rehman could pose challenges for MQM in Karachi.
